Series Description[]
The books take place about 250 years after an apocalypse that created a rift in the world and monsters came pouring in. The world have somewhat recovered. The majority of humanity live in protected communities and one of the protections are Hunters. The largest and capital is "Apex".
As the story opens Joyeaux Charmand (aka Joy) a 16 year old girl that has been a Hunter for 7 years, is sent for by her Uncle, to come to Apex and to join their Hunters, but she can't let on that she has been a Hunter that long. Even at 16 she is considered very young to be hunter. She also has the largest hound pack at seven, when most hunters only have 2 or 4.
Joy is well aware that since her Uncle is someone that is important that people could try and use her against him, so not only does she have to be careful of who to trust but also in what she says to everyone. She suspects that is exactly why she was sent for, that someone might have threatened her and thus would expose their secrets about Safehaven.
The Monster attacks become worse and the Hunters are hard pressed to keep the cits safe, not only does Joy have to learn to navigate this new world of her, but also survive against betrayal from within as well as the monsters.

World Building[]
Setting[]
Our world about 250 years after apocalyptic events, takes place in North America Eastern seaboard.
The Apocalyptic events started as extreme weather caused by climate changes due to greenhouse gasses. The Christians thought it was the "Rapture" and were expecting to be taken up to heaven, when no one was raptured they decided that Armageddon needed a little help so they set off a nuclear bomb in the middle-east which created a rift between universe and let in the Othersiders (Monsters).
By the time of these stories, humanity had made something of a recovery but with the world taken over by monsters, all they could do was make safer or protected zones. Machines are utilized to help with food production out in the farming communities, where many of the towns are walled fortresses and the army maintains a presence with heavy armament. Communications is well established between communities and people.
The only people that fly are military in armed helicopters as there are too many monsters that fly and can take down an airplane. Most long distance travel is done on trains, where the trains run through electrified cages over them and the tracks, to keep the monsters away from the trains.

Monsters. |
California is an Island (briefly mentioned) and monsters from folk lore, mythology and imaginations have flooded the world and the only semi-safe place is within barriers.
Few people are born with the ability to do magic, usually a type of magic that is steeped in one of the many old religions such as native American shaman, Celtic or far eastern. At some point usually during adolescents and if their magic is strong enough, they receive an unique scar / glyph (Mandala) on the back of both hands, the Mandala represents their "hounds" that come through a shadowy rift to help them battle the monsters. The pack of hounds is unique to each person and bonds with them, they can become solid when present in the human world. The hounds soak up the manna from the monsters that the Hunter's slay, which is what substance them. The hounds also have magic of their own, but usually just shields. Some breath fire and some fly. When the glyphs appear the new hunters are suppose to immediately go to the city Apex, the capital and where most people live, people that think they are safe. But a few of the far outlying communities keep and train their Hunters to protect their own citizens because the people of Apex don't really care about the people in those communities.
A few other people are born with psi abilities and they too are sent to Apex to become part of PsiCorps, they are called Psimon.
